Lagos—The Nigeria Police Force is investigating the shooting death of Gabriel Audu, a police aide, by his colleague, Corporal Umar Lawal, on August 8, 2024, in Surulere, Lagos State.

The incident occurred following a dispute over a used phone.

According to police reports, the confrontation took place at approximately 10:22 p.m. When the argument escalated, Lawal attempted to shoot Mr. Vincent, another aide involved in the dispute. However, the bullet struck Audu instead, who later died at Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH).

Lawal, assigned to Barrister Wale Fapohunda, has been arrested, and his AK47 rifle, used in the shooting, was recovered. He has confessed to the crime, stating he intended to shoot Vincent during the argument.

The police have conducted an initial investigation, photographing Audu’s body and placing it in the hospital morgue for an autopsy.
