Abuja, Nigeria – The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has achieved a significant milestone with the appointment of Deputy Superintendent of Customs (Pilot) Olanike Balogun as its first female pilot. Born in Kaduna and a native of Odo-Otin Local Government Area in Osun State, Balogun’s groundbreaking achievement marks a new chapter for women in the Service and the aviation sector.

Balogun’s journey to this historic feat began in 2002, when she joined the NCS as a Customs Assistant in the Airwing Unit, serving initially as a cabin crew member. Over the years, her determination and the Service’s support propelled her transformation from a flight attendant to a licensed pilot.

In an interview, Balogun reflected on the challenges and sacrifices she faced along the way. “Staying in the Service when many of my colleagues opted for better-paying airline jobs was a tough decision, but I was determined to contribute to public service and achieve my dream of becoming a pilot,” she said.

Her academic accomplishments include an Advanced Diploma in Air Ticketing and Cabin Services, a Master’s degree in Public Administration from Ahmadu Bello University, and a Pilot Certification from the Flying Academy in Miami, Florida. The NCS fully sponsored her pilot training.

Balogun highlighted her role as an inspiration for other women within and outside the Service. “Being the first female pilot in the Service reflects my commitment as a woman to advancing my passionate dream and enhancing the operational capabilities of the NCS,” she noted.

The Comptroller General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, praised Balogun’s achievement, describing it as a testament to the Service’s commitment to fostering innovation and building capacity. “Her story exemplifies what is possible with determination and institutional support,” he said.

Balogun remains passionate about empowering the next generation of Nigerians, especially women, to overcome barriers and chase their dreams. “I hope my journey motivates young Nigerians to pursue their ambitions with courage and resilience,” she said.
