Ekiti, Nigeria – The Ekiti State High Court has granted bail to prominent activist and legal practitioner, Dele Farotimi, following his recent arrest by the Ekiti State Police Command.
The bail conditions, set at ₦50 million, include the provision of a surety of equal value who must own a piece of landed property. The case has been adjourned to January 29, 2025, for further proceedings.
Farotimi was brought to court by Chief Afe Babalola, SAN, a respected legal luminary aged 95, who accused him of defamation. The allegation stems from Farotimi’s book, Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System.
The activist’s arrest has sparked widespread outrage, with civil society organisations and the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) calling for his immediate release. The development has raised concerns about press freedom and the treatment of dissenting voices in Nigeria.
