In a televised address on Sunday, President Bola Tinubu urged protesters to avoid actions that could hinder Nigeria’s economic recovery.
Acknowledging the economic hardships driving the nationwide protests, Tinubu expressed empathy for the protesters’ “pain and frustration” but emphasized the importance of not letting such demonstrations block the nation’s economic progress.
“The economy is on its way to full recovery,” Tinubu stated, adding that his administration is committed to addressing the protesters’ concerns while ensuring stability. He urged for collaboration to build a prosperous future and cautioned against violence and destruction.
Tinubu highlighted ongoing efforts to improve national infrastructure and create opportunities for the youth, reassuring that the government is dedicated to delivering tangible results. “We are in a new era of Renewed Hope,” he said, urging citizens to choose hope and unity over fear and division.
The protests, which began on August 1 under the banners #EndBadGovernance and ‘hunger protest,’ have seen varying levels of participation. While initial turnout was significant, numbers have declined over the past few days.
Some northern regions have experienced violence and property damage, whereas southern demonstrations have remained largely peaceful.
The protests are scheduled to continue until August 10.
REPORT AFRIQUE reported that some protesters were arrested in Yobe by the Nigerian police following the eruption of violence at the demonstration scene yesterday.
