Uyo, Nigeria – An armed attack on a crew of DStv journalists en route to Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, for an African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier match has resulted in the death of one crew member, while six others have been successfully rescued.
The incident occurred along the Isseke-Orlu Road in Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The Anambra State Police Command confirmed the rescue operation, stating that joint security forces led the mission. According to the command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the journalists were abducted while traveling from Lagos to Uyo to cover the Super Eagles’ match against Libya, scheduled for Friday.
“Joint security forces have successfully rescued six members of the media crew who were abducted while traveling from Lagos to Uyo along Isseke-Orlu Road in Ihiala,” SP Ikenga stated.
He further disclosed that operations are still ongoing to secure the release of the seventh crew member. Unfortunately, it was confirmed on Thursday that the seventh crew member, identified as Kay, a technical crew member, was shot dead during the rescue operation.
The command assured the public that efforts are being made to apprehend the perpetrators and ensure the safety of all media personnel operating in the state.
