Abuja, Nigeria – August 14, 2024
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has urged the creation of a special court to prosecute cases of crude oil theft, citing the need for a dedicated legal framework to address the growing challenge.
Speaking at an investigative hearing by the House of Representatives special committee on crude oil theft, EFCC Director of Investigation, Abdulkarim Chukkol, revealed that over 400 cases were charged to court in 2019, with an additional 200 prosecuted in 2022. He emphasized that a special court would enhance the agency’s efforts in combating crude oil theft.
This call echoes a similar recommendation made by Mele Kyari, Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Limited, in June. Kyari stressed the need for special courts or accelerated hearings to tackle crude oil theft and pipeline vandalism, which have severely undermined the gains of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) 2021.
