Sheikh Hasina and Former Bangladesh Officials Face Murder Investigation
A murder investigation has been initiated against former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina following the police shooting of a man during civil unrest in Dhaka last month. Six other high-ranking officials from her government are also under scrutiny as part of the probe.
The case was filed by Mamun Mia, a lawyer acting on behalf of a private citizen, who confirmed that a Dhaka court has ordered police to formally accept the charges. This marks the first step in a criminal investigation under Bangladeshi law.
Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled to India earlier this month amid escalating political unrest. The turmoil, which claimed over 400 lives, was sparked by student protests against her leadership. Many of the victims were reportedly shot by police acting on her orders.
The investigation includes former Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader, who is among those being held accountable for the violence. The case stems from an incident on July 19, where a local grocer named Abu Saeed was shot in the head during what was described as a peaceful protest by students. The lawsuit was filed in July by businessman Amir Hamza, who accused police of firing indiscriminately on the crowd.
