Abuja, Nigeria – The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has resumed the collection of access gate fees at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, following a two-week suspension. The fee collection officially resumed at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, February 8, 2025.

FAAN had temporarily halted the toll charges on January 24 to ease movement around the airport amid ongoing road construction. In a public notice shared on its official X (formerly Twitter) account, the Authority confirmed the resumption of fee collection and expressed appreciation to travelers and motorists for their patience during the suspension period.

The access gate fees apply to all vehicles entering the airport premises, a policy designed to standardize toll collection and generate revenue for airport infrastructure. FAAN has assured the public of improved traffic flow despite the ongoing construction work.

Federal Airport Toll Policy and E-Tag System

In May 2024, the Federal Executive Council (FEC) approved a nationwide policy requiring all users of federal airports in Nigeria to pay toll fees at airport gates. The policy applies to all motorists, including high-ranking government officials such as the President and Vice President.

To streamline toll collection, FAAN introduced an electronic tagging (E-tag) system, which grants year-long access to airport gates. Motorists without an E-tag must pay cash upon entry. The sale of E-tags began on May 17, 2024, following the FEC directive, and these tags provide access to all 24 federal airports in the country.

The E-tag system aims to enhance revenue generation, improve toll collection efficiency, and facilitate better airport management.

Temporary Suspension to Ease Traffic

FAAN had suspended the access gate fees at Abuja airport from January 24 to February 7, 2025, to mitigate traffic congestion caused by the construction of a second runway. With the expiration of the suspension period, motorists and airport visitors must now pay tolls to gain entry.

FAAN reiterated its commitment to ensuring a smooth and efficient toll collection process as it continues efforts to enhance airport infrastructure nationwide.
