Abuja, Nigeria – The presidency has criticised Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, over his comments on the recent stampedes that resulted in multiple fatalities, including children, in Oyo, Anambra, and Abuja.
Sunday Dare, Special Adviser on Media and Public Communication to President Bola Tinubu, expressed the presidency’s disapproval via his X (formerly Twitter) account.
Dare described Obi’s remarks as lacking decency and statesmanship. He stated, “When seeking someone who benefits from the misfortune of others or from confusion — what the Yoruba people describe as Aríje nínú Màdàrú — look no further than Peter Obi.
“His recent comments on the avoidable tragedies in Anambra and Oyo states lack statesmanship and decency, even as he clings to the fading echoes of his much-vaunted political victory. This attempt to score cheap political points falls flat.”
The adviser added that during times of tragedy, leaders should offer support and speak responsibly. He pointed out that President Tinubu had cancelled his engagements, expressed profound sadness over the loss of lives, and ordered an immediate investigation into the incidents.
“These incidents have highlighted critical issues that must be addressed. The Tinubu administration remains committed to addressing the economic challenges facing the country to improve the standard of living for ordinary Nigerians,” Dare said.
Tragic Stampedes
The tragedies referenced involved multiple stampedes over the past week. On Wednesday, approximately 40 children lost their lives during a stampede at a children’s fair in Ibadan, Oyo State.
On Saturday, another stampede during the distribution of rice and other palliatives at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Maitama, Abuja, claimed 10 lives.
Similarly, in Anambra State, at least 17 residents of the Okija community died during a stampede over rice palliatives.
Peter Obi’s Response
Reacting to the incidents via his X handle, Obi described the stampedes as indicative of systemic failures in Nigeria. He expressed concern over the country’s inability to address hunger and poverty despite its abundant resources and fertile land.
The comments have sparked a debate about the appropriateness of Obi’s statements, with the presidency accusing him of politicising the tragedies to score political points.
