Abuja, Nigeria – The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced a partnership with Pakistan aimed at improving agricultural production and enhancing food security.
The development was disclosed on Sunday in a statement issued by Umar Rashida, Principal Information Officer at the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security.
The announcement followed a courtesy visit by Pakistan’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Major General (Rtd) Sohail Khan, to Senator Aliyu Abdullahi, Nigeria’s Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, in Abuja.
During the meeting, Senator Abdullahi highlighted the importance of strengthening agricultural cooperation between the two nations, referencing their long-standing cordial relationship and shared interests.
“Nigeria is ready to partner with all our friends by creating something that would work for the two countries,” Abdullahi stated. He also emphasized the urgent need to address challenges such as climate change and food insecurity, noting that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is committed to tackling these issues, particularly the impact of insecurity on agriculture.
“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, is working hard to find solutions to insecurity and its effects on agricultural productivity,” he added.
High Commissioner Sohail Khan reiterated Pakistan’s readiness to share expertise and training with Nigeria to enhance its agricultural sector. He emphasized Pakistan’s achievements in agricultural innovation and research, offering capacity-building opportunities for Nigerian professionals, including exchange programs.
“We are looking at offering you ways and means through which Nigeria can build its capacity,” Khan said. He pointed out Pakistan’s global standing in agricultural production, noting that it is the 5th largest producer of cotton, 4th largest producer of sugar, and 8th largest producer of meat. Pakistan also ranks as the 10th largest producer of both rice and other significant agricultural products.
The partnership is expected to facilitate knowledge exchange, bolster agricultural productivity, and contribute to food security in both countries.
