Abuja, Nigeria – The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the renaming of the University of Abuja to Yakubu Gowon University in honor of Nigeria’s former military head of state, General Yakubu Gowon (retd.).
The announcement was made on Monday by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, following FEC’s final meeting of 2024 held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The university officially commenced academic activities in 1990 with the matriculation of its first set of students.
Yakubu Gowon served as Nigeria’s head of state from 1966 to 1975 and is celebrated for his contributions to the country’s unity during his tenure.
Nationwide Free Transportation for Christmas
In the same address, Idris revealed that President Bola Tinubu has approved free nationwide transportation to ease the movement of Nigerians during the Christmas season. The initiative includes free train services from December 20, 2024, to January 5, 2025.
The FEC also announced that it would go on recess from December 18, 2024, and resume on January 6, 2025.
