The Federal Government has announced plans to relocate Ikoyi Prison and other correctional centers from urban areas to alternative locations.
This decision comes as urbanization has encroached on the buffer zones around these facilities, posing security concerns.
Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, revealed on Channels Television’s Politics Today program that the government aims to initiate the relocation process, citing the example of Ikoyi Correctional Centre, which shares a fence with nearby houses.
Tunji-Ojo emphasized that President Tinubu inherited 256 correctional centers in need of attention, including some built over a century ago. He highlighted the government’s efforts to renovate and rebuild prisons, with over 10 facilities already renovated, including the Kuje correctional center.
The government also plans to conduct an “inmate audit” to identify and release those being held unnecessarily, decongesting the prisons.
This move aims to improve the overall security and efficiency of the correctional system in Nigeria.
