President Bola Tinubu’s administration has announced plans to increase the monthly allowance of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members to the minimum wage level, pending approval from the National Assembly.

NYSC Director General, Brigadier General Y.D Ahmed, made the disclosure during his visit to the Ogun state orientation camp on Saturday, July 6. Ahmed commended the 2,762 Batch ‘B’ Stream I corps members for their dedication and emphasized the importance of discipline and collectivism.

However, he also warned corps members against unauthorized travel and social media posts, citing safety concerns and the recent decamping of three members for violating rules.

The announcement comes as the government, labor, and private sector continue negotiations on a new minimum wage following the fuel subsidy removal. While an agreement has yet to be reached, the proposed increase in NYSC allowance reflects the administration’s commitment to supporting young individuals serving the nation.

The NYSC Director-General reassured corps members that they would be included in the minimum wage agreement, pending approval from the National Assembly. The Scheme’s priority remains ensuring the safe return of all corps members to their homes and families at the end of their service.
