The minister pointed out that while the NYSC currently serves university graduates, no equivalent program exists for those with NCE and similar qualifications.
Ibadan, Nigeria – The Federal Ministry of Youth Development has announced plans to introduce a training program similar to the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) specifically for graduates of the Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE).
Mr. Olawande Wisdom, Minister of State for Youth Development, made the announcement during the opening ceremony of the BEMORE OYO 2024 Summer Bootcamp in Ibadan, where he revealed the latest development.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Mr. Wisdom revealed that the ministry is collaborating with the Ministry of Education to implement several training reforms, including a program designed for NCE graduates.
The minister pointed out that while the NYSC currently serves university graduates, no equivalent program exists for those with NCE and similar qualifications. “Our primary focus is on citizenship and training. We have NYSC for university graduates, but what about those who finished from NCE and others?” Wisdom asked.
The proposed scheme aims to provide localized training opportunities, allowing participants to complete their service without needing to travel to other states. The program is part of broader efforts by the ministry to address social issues and promote positive youth engagement.
Mr. Wisdom also praised the contributions of organizations like the Boys’ Brigade and Girl Guides, which he said play a vital role in steering young people away from negative influences.
In his remarks, Mr. Wisdom commended Dr. Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, the founder of the BEMORE Empowered Girls Foundation, for her dedication to the development of girls and her efforts to elevate standards in the field of education.
Dr. Anyanwu-Akeredolu clarified that the BEMORE initiative is independently funded and not supported by the Ondo State Government. She emphasized the importance of including women and girls in development programs, citing her personal experiences as inspiration for the initiative. “We cannot achieve development if we leave 50% of our population, made up of women and girls,” she stated.
The event also saw participation from notable figures, including the Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Odu’a Investments, Mr. Abdulrahman Yinusa. He encouraged participants to take full advantage of the training opportunities provided, commending the organizers and mentors for their commitment to advancing girls through technological education.
