Abuja, Nigeria – After months of anticipation, the Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to paying National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members the backlog of their increased monthly allowance.
The government had announced an increment in corps members’ stipends from ₦33,000 to ₦77,000 in September 2024, in line with the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act. However, the implementation has faced repeated delays, despite assurances from officials.
On Monday, the Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, reassured corps members that those who were serving at the time of the announcement would receive backdated payments. Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today (yesterday), Olawande emphasized that the payment process is underway.

The minister acknowledged frustrations over the delay but explained that the increase had not been included in the initial budget when it was announced. He noted that bureaucratic procedures required proper budgetary allocation before disbursement could commence.
“You heard the new NYSC DG confirm that corps members will get their allowance, including those who have completed their service but were eligible for the increment,” Olawande stated. “We have their details, and we will ensure they are paid. While it may not be immediate, it will definitely happen.”
Last week, NYSC Director-General Olakunle Nafiu indicated that the new allowance would take effect in March. Olawande backed this timeline, confirming that the budgetary approval process has now been completed.
“This has been a lengthy process, as government payments must follow due procedures,” the minister explained. “However, the necessary budgetary allocations have been finalized, and corps members can now expect their payments to begin.”
With the approvals now in place, corps members eagerly await the long-delayed implementation of their new allowance.
