Dozens injured and severe burns reported as tanker explosion Rocks Haiti
PORT-AU-PRINCE,HAITI- A catastrophic fuel tanker explosion in Haiti has claimed the lives of 24 people, with many others left critically injured, some suffering burns over 80% of their bodies. The tragedy occurred on Saturday near the commune of Miragoane, approximately 100 kilometers west of the capital, Port-au-Prince.
According to reports, the fuel tanker collided with another vehicle and began leaking fuel. As people rushed to collect the spilt fuel, the tanker exploded, causing widespread devastation.
Prime Minister Garry Conille, speaking at Port-au-Prince airport, described the scene as “horrible” and vowed to ensure that victims receive urgent medical care. Authorities initially reported 16 fatalities, but the death toll rose as more bodies were discovered at the site.
Haiti’s civil protection agency, led by Emmanuel Pierre, continues its response to the disaster. This incident echoes a similar tragedy in 2021, when over 60 people died in a gas tanker explosion.
The explosion comes as the country grapples with increasing instability, with violent gangs controlling large portions of the country.
