Lagos, Nigeria – The governors of Rivers, Ondo, and Jigawa states have reaffirmed their dedication to establishing state police forces to combat insecurity in their respective domains.
The governors made their commitment at the Nigerian Bar Association’s (NBA) Annual General Conference in Lagos.
Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State, represented by the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Dagogo Eborama, highlighted the inefficiency of the current centralized police system in addressing crime. He argued that state policing is the best solution to rising insecurity.
Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State praised the success of the state’s security outfit, Amotekun, in addressing security challenges.
He emphasized that state policing is the most effective way to tackle insecurity, citing the synergy between Amotekun and other security agencies that has made Ondo State one of the most peaceful in Nigeria.
Governor Umar Namadi of Jigawa State, represented by the Attorney-General, Mr. Bello Fanini, supported a multi-layered police system, with state-level policing complementing federal police.
Former Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice for Oyo State, Prof. Oyelowo Oyewo, SAN, emphasized the urgency for state policing, citing Amotekun’s success in making a difference in tackling insecurity.
The governors and experts acknowledged concerns about abuse, training, funding, and political interference but believed that with proper safeguards and governance structures, state policing can be a transformative solution to Nigeria’s security challenges.
