Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian Dismisses Deputy Over Controversial Antarctic Trip Amid Economic Crisis

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has terminated the position of his deputy for parliamentary affairs, Shahram Dabiri, following backlash over a lavish trip to Antarctica. This decision comes as Iran grapples with hyperinflation and significant economic turmoil.

A photo circulating on social media recently showcased Dabiri, 64, who is a physician and a longtime ally of Pezeshkian, alongside his wife near the Plancius cruise ship. The Dutch vessel has been in operation since 2009, providing luxury expeditions to Antarctica, with an agency offering an eight-day trip for approximately 3,885 euros per individual.

In a letter reported by the official IRNA news agency on Saturday, President Pezeshkian stated, “In a context where economic pressure on the population remains high, expensive leisure trips by officials, even if funded personally, are neither defensible nor justifiable.” This strong criticism reflects growing public discontent amid dire economic conditions.

The publication of Dabiri’s photo led to widespread criticism of the government, prompting many of Pezeshkian’s supporters to call for his removal. An IRNA report from late last month cited a source within Dabiri’s office claiming that the trip had been made prior to his appointment to the government role in August.

This incident represents a significant setback for Pezeshkian, who was elected last year with promises to revitalize the economy and enhance the quality of life for Iranian citizens. The president’s challenges were further compounded in March when the parliament dismissed Economy Minister Abdolnasser Hemmati amid the national currency’s sharp decline against the dollar and escalating inflation concerns.
