Dutse, Nigeria – The Jigawa State Government has appealed to the Federal Government for urgent assistance as floods continue to wreak havoc across 12 local government areas, displacing over 3,834 residents and destroying vast farmlands.

Dr. Haruna Mairiga, the Executive Secretary of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), made the plea during a press briefing in Dutse, the state capital. He emphasized the need for immediate support to alleviate the suffering of those affected by the disaster.

“As of now, a total of 3,834 people have been displaced, and more than 2,744 hectares of farmlands have been washed away by floods in the 12 affected LGAs,” Dr. Mairiga said. “We are appealing to the Federal Government, philanthropists, and donor agencies to assist the victims.”

The flooding, which has persisted due to intermittent rainfall between August 1 and 13, 2024, has claimed the lives of more than 16 people.

The affected local governments include Buji, Kafin Hausa, Auyo, Hadejia, Birniwa, Malam Madori, Garki, Taura, Gwaram, Dutse, Kiyawa, and Jahun.

Governor Umar Namadi’s administration has been working to protect the livelihoods of citizens, but Dr. Mairiga stressed the need for collective efforts during such disasters. “All hands must be on deck to support the government’s efforts,” he added.

SEMA has provided interim relief to affected communities, including food items, rubber mats, blankets, mosquito nets, and financial aid. However, the agency continues to solicit humanitarian support for internally displaced persons (IDPs), particularly for food and non-food items, to help them during this challenging time and assist in their rehabilitation once the floodwaters recede.

Mansur Musa, the Chairman of Kiyawa Local Government Area, also highlighted the severity of the situation, noting that many villages and the local government secretariat have been submerged. Displaced residents have been temporarily relocated to primary and secondary schools in the area.

The Jigawa state government continues to monitor the situation and awaits further support from the Federal Government and other stakeholders.
