Kano, Nigeria — A wave of campaign posters featuring former President Goodluck Jonathan has surfaced across key locations in Kano State, fueling speculation about a potential political comeback in 2027.
The posters, created by a group called Team New Nigeria (TNN), were prominently displayed at major sites including the Gyadi-Gyadi/Zoo Road flyover, Kofar Nasarawa, and State Road. They carried the slogan: “Team New Nigeria 2027: The Goodluck Nigeria Needs—Dr Goodluck Jonathan.”
TNN, led by Modibbo Yakubu Farakwai, has been advancing its political agenda with recent activities, including the inauguration of a Kano State harmonisation committee. However, it remains unclear whether Jonathan has sanctioned these efforts, as his spokesperson, Okechukwu Eze, was unavailable for comment.
Addressing journalists in Kano, Farakwai highlighted the group’s motivation as a response to public demand for political change.
“Nigerians are hungry for change and yearning for a new party with new faces to drive that change. They want a transformation in the culture and efficacy of governance at all levels,” he stated.
Farakwai revealed that TNN has registered over 26 million voters nationwide and is working toward formalising its status as a political party. The group has reportedly developed a party flag, logo, name, constitution, and manifesto, and has initiated discussions with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for registration.
“TNN will provide not only an alternative government but an alternative culture of governance rooted in the ideals of democracy,” Farakwai added. He also noted the group’s ongoing nationwide rallies aimed at engaging Nigerians in discussions on governance and leadership.
Jonathan’s 2027 Eligibility
The development recalls a similar scenario in 2022, when Jonathan’s supporters purchased nomination forms for him under the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2023 presidential election. Jonathan later distanced himself from the bid.
The speculation about Jonathan’s eligibility follows a Federal High Court ruling in Bayelsa State, which declared him eligible to run for president again. The court ruled that no retroactive law could bar his candidacy, even though he had been sworn in as president twice.
Whether the former president will embrace this growing movement remains to be seen, as neither he nor his representatives have commented on the campaign efforts.
