Lagos, Nigeria – Former President Goodluck Jonathan has explained why his administration did not implement the recommendations of the 2014 National Conference, attributing it to political tensions and internal crises within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2015 general elections.
Jonathan made this revelation during a condolence visit to the family of the late Afenifere leader, Pa Ayo Adebanjo, in Lagos. He acknowledged Adebanjo’s significant contributions to the success of the conference, noting that despite initial skepticism about his motives, the conference progressed with the support of respected national figures.
“Without people like him and other leaders, the conference wouldn’t have taken place,” Jonathan stated. He also noted that while some participants sought his guidance during the deliberations, he chose to allow experienced delegates to make independent decisions.
The former president emphasized that although the conference produced vital recommendations, the political climate at the time was not conducive for their implementation.
“It was not the time we could present such a document. We believe that one day, a government will review it and adopt it because the outcomes remain relevant,” he said.
Jonathan also used the occasion to pay tribute to Pa Adebanjo and Pan-Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) leader, Edwin Clark, describing them as advocates for justice and national development.
“He was a man of wisdom, courage, and commitment to truth and justice—values essential for national growth,” Jonathan remarked.
The 2014 National Conference, convened by Jonathan’s administration, was aimed at addressing key national issues, including governance, restructuring, and constitutional amendments. However, its recommendations remain unimplemented to date.
