The Rivers State Police Command has apprehended four suspected kidnappers believed to be involved in the abduction of workers in Okocha Community, Igbo-Etche, Etche Local Government Area of the state.
The arrests come following complaints by a company regarding missing workers, prompting swift action by law enforcement authorities.
According to Grace Iringe-Koko, the spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, the arrests were made following reports by the management of Lujo Heights Homes about the disappearance of four staff members during a routine property inspection in Okocha Community on January 19, 2024. Despite efforts to establish contact with the missing individuals, there was no response, prompting an intensive police operation to uncover the truth.
During the operation, four suspects were apprehended, with investigations revealing their alleged involvement in the kidnapping incident. The suspects, believed to be part of a criminal syndicate operating under the guise of cattle rearers, subjected their victims to a harrowing experience, threatening to kill them unless a ransom of N300 million was paid for their release.
“The victims, who endured a harrowing ordeal in the forests of Etche, recounted being subjected to inhumane treatment and constant threats of death,” Iringe-Koko stated. The suspects confessed to their involvement in the abduction and subsequent destruction of the Toyota Sequoia SUV used during the crime.
Furthermore, during the operations, law enforcement operatives recovered two locally-made pistols, two smartphones, and a black Toyota Sequoia belonging to the gang. The successful operation marks a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to combat kidnapping and other criminal activities within the region.
In a separate development, the Rivers State Police Command’s Anti-Cultism Unit apprehended a notorious cultist and kidnapper identified as Godfrey Odum. Odum is implicated in the abduction of Precious Chukwu, a student of Elechi Amadi Polytechnic, who was subsequently robbed of her belongings before being released. Odum’s confession and provision of crucial information regarding other gang members involved highlight the effectiveness of law enforcement efforts in dismantling criminal networks.
Expressing commendation for the outstanding efforts of the officers involved, Commissioner of Police Tunji Disu reiterated the command’s unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety and security of residents. Disu advised residents to exercise caution when hiring security personnel and emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts in combating crime and rid the state of criminal elements.
The arrests underscore the determination of the Rivers State Police Command to tackle crime and uphold the rule of law, sending a strong message to criminals that their activities will not be tolerated. As investigations continue and charges are pressed against the suspects, the authorities remain vigilant in their pursuit of justice and the protection of the public.
