Sanwo-Olu expressed his ambition to raise the state’s minimum wage to N100,000 by January aimed at improving the living standard of Lagosians.

Lagos, Nigeria – Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has announced a new minimum wage of N85,000 for civil servants in the state, with plans to further increase it to N100,000 by January 2024.

Sanwo-Olu made the disclosure during an interview on Politics Today, a program on Channels Television, on Wednesday. He highlighted that the state’s decision to raise the minimum wage was based on its capacity to sustain the increment, rather than competing with other states.

“We have discussed with our union, and I’m glad to let you know that the minimum wage for Lagos today is N85,000,” Sanwo-Olu stated.

The governor acknowledged the high cost of living in Lagos, noting that the state’s financial capacity allows for such adjustments. “Lagos has a premium in terms of the cost of living, and we are fully aware of that,” he said, adding that salaries were previously increased earlier in the year.

Sanwo-Olu expressed his ambition to raise the state’s minimum wage to N100,000 by January. “It is really because I want my people to have a living wage. I want them to know that the government is working for them,” he said.

The new wage structure, according to the governor, is aimed at improving the quality of life for the state workers, demonstrating the government’s commitment to ensuring a living wage for its employees.
