Ondo State, Nigeria – Tragedy struck on Saturday evening as a fatal road accident claimed the lives of 30 people on the Benin-Ore-Ijebu Ode Expressway at Onipetesi community in Odigbo Local Government Area of Ondo State.
According to the Ondo Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the accident occurred when two commercial buses collided head-on and burst into flames. Most of the victims were burnt beyond recognition.
The FRSC Sector Commander, Mr. Samuel Ibitoye, confirmed the incident on Sunday, stating that preliminary investigations revealed that one of the buses had been driving against traffic.
“Thirty people lost their lives in the accident. Twenty-eight were burnt beyond recognition, while two initially survived but later died on their way to the hospital,” Ibitoye said.
Eyewitness Account
A witness at the scene recounted the harrowing incident, explaining that the impact of the collision caused both vehicles to erupt in flames.
“We were nearby when we heard a very loud sound. On reaching the scene, we saw the two buses already burning, while some passengers were struggling to escape,” the eyewitness said.
Shortly after the accident, FRSC officers arrived and rushed the two initial survivors to the hospital, but they succumbed to their injuries.
In response to the tragedy, the FRSC commander urged motorists to drive with caution, obey traffic regulations, and avoid reckless driving to prevent further loss of lives on the expressway.
