Abuja, Nigeria – Deputy Chief Whip of the House of Representatives, Hon. Adewunmi Onanuga, has passed away following a brief illness. The sad news was confirmed on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, in a statement issued by the House spokesperson, Akin Rotimi.
Onanuga, who represented the Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency of Ogun State, was born on December 2, 1965. She was a prominent lawmaker and a devoted public servant known for her advocacy for women’s rights and social welfare.
The late lawmaker was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2019 under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC). During her first tenure, she served as Chairperson of the House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development in the 9th Assembly, where she championed numerous policies aimed at empowering women and improving social welfare. Re-elected in 2023, she took on the role of Deputy Chief Whip in the 10th Assembly, demonstrating exceptional leadership and dedication to legislative discipline.

In his statement, Akin Rotimi described the late legislator as “a visionary leader, passionate advocate, and a committed public servant whose contributions will continue to inspire future generations.”
The National Assembly, Ogun State Government, and the Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North constituency join her family, friends, and associates in mourning her loss. Funeral arrangements will be announced by the family in due course.
