Two Catholic Sisters Kidnapped in Anambra State

The Anambra State Police Command has launched a joint operation to rescue the victims and apprehend the perpetrators. Commissioner of Police Nnaghe Obono Itam visited the scene of the incident and assured the public that the command is following leads to resolve the case.

Anambra, Nigeria – Two Catholic nuns, Sr. Vincentia Maria Nwankwo and Sr. Grace Mariette Okoli, have been abducted by unknown gunmen in Anambra State.

The incident occurred on Tuesday evening along Ufuma Road in Orumba South Local Government Area as the nuns were returning from a vocational association meeting in Ogboji.

Sr. Vincentia Maria Nwankwo serves as the Principal of Archbishop Charles Heerey Memorial Model Secondary School, Ufuma, while Sr. Grace Mariette Okoli is a teacher at Immaculata Girls Model Secondary School, Nnewi.

The Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, Mother of Christ, confirmed the abduction in a statement issued on Wednesday by Sister Maria Sobenna Ikeotuonye, the Secretary General of the congregation. The statement called on all priests, religious groups, and lay faithful to offer prayers for the unconditional release of the sisters.

In a statement, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, spokesperson for the state police command, said, “A police-led joint operation is already ongoing for the possible rescue of two Catholic nuns allegedly kidnapped along Ufuma Road, Orumba South Local Government Area. The incident occurred on the evening of January 7, 2025, as the nuns were returning from a vocational service meeting in Ogboji.”

This abduction highlights the growing insecurity in Anambra State, where incidents of kidnapping and violent crime have become increasingly common.
