His Royal Highness, Eze Cyprian Amadi-Worenwu, the Eze Risi Ohia-Emeri Abali of Rebisi, has been remanded in the Port Harcourt Correctional Facility by a Federal High Court in Port Harcourt.
The monarch faces charges related to an alleged threat to life.
Amadi-Worenwu was arraigned on one count of threatening the life of retired Justice Adolphus Enebeli. The charge alleges that on March 28, 2023, Amadi-Worenwu communicated a threatening message to Sunday Gift-Chinenem’s phone, causing Justice Enebeli to fear for his life.
The message reportedly included threats against the retired judge and his son, with specific references to knowing the son’s workplace and ensuring the judge would not enjoy his retirement.
The threat is alleged to stem from a March 20, 2023, chieftaincy judgment delivered by Justice Enebeli, which was not in Amadi-Worenwu’s favor. The charge cites section 24 (B.C) of the Crime Prohibition Prevention Acts 2015.
Amadi-Worenwu pleaded not guilty when the charge was read. His defense counsel, A. S. Amadi, requested bail orally, but this was denied by the presiding judge, Justice Emmanuel Obele. The prosecution, represented by ASP Welter Ogwuikpile, opposed the bail application.
Justice Obele adjourned the case to July 29, 2024, for bail consideration and ordered that Amadi-Worenwu be remanded in the Port Harcourt Correctional Facility until then.
The monarch was arrested by detectives from the Rivers State Criminal Investigation Department after repeatedly avoiding police invitations regarding the alleged threats. He was initially granted bail but allegedly jumped bail until his recent arrest at the police station, leading to his arraignment.
