A devastating accident occurred in Lokoja on Thursday when a 40-feet articulated container fell on two vehicles, trapping eight school children inside one of the cars. However, in a miraculous turn of events, all eight children were rescued unhurt.
According to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Sector Commander, Samuel Oyedeji, the incident happened at Lokongoma market in the Lokoja metropolis around 5:30 pm.
The container, which was not properly latched on the trailer, fell off and landed on a Toyota Corolla car and a Nissan car with the eight school children inside.
The children were rescued with the help of the people and rushed to Kogi State Specialist Hospital for medical check-up. The parents of the children were nearby, buying items from a shop when the incident occurred.
The FRSC has vowed to prosecute the driver of the trailer, who fled the scene, for violating traffic laws. The sector commander emphasized the need to relocate markets away from roads to avoid casualties.
An eyewitness and owner of one of the smashed vehicles, John Adama, described the incident as a miracle, saying his car helped save the lives of the children. He appealed to the government to replace his car, which was damaged beyond repair.
Government officials, including the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Folashade Ayoade, and the Information Commissioner, Kingsley Fanwo, commended the rescue efforts and assured that the errant driver would be prosecuted.
