Lagos, Nigeria – An explosion at the Boundary Market in the Ajegunle area of Lagos State on Tuesday morning led to a devastating fire that razed 11 shops and destroyed properties worth millions of naira.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed the incident, attributing the explosion to a gas leak from a retailer’s shop storing cylinders of various sizes.
The Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, stated that the agency received distress calls through the 767/112 emergency numbers at 9:20 a.m., prompting the deployment of the Eagle Response Team from its Onipanu base. The team arrived at the scene by 9:37 a.m. and worked to contain the fire.
“Investigations revealed that the explosion originated from a gas retailer’s shop due to a gas leakage from one of the cylinders, which spread to other shops in the area,” Oke-Osanyintolu said.
He added that 11 shops were affected, including two gas retail outlets and nine others selling items such as clothes, phones, PVC pipes, and daily essentials. Despite the extent of the damage, the fire was successfully extinguished, and adjoining buildings were safeguarded.
The operation involved collaboration between the LASEMA Cobra Team, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Federal Fire Service, Dangote Fire Service, and other emergency responders.
Authorities confirmed that the scene was secured to prevent secondary incidents following the fire.
No casualties were reported as of press time, but investigations into the incident are ongoing.
