While no casualties were reported, attempts to contact the Enugu State Fire Service in Nsukka and the Nsukka Local Government Chairman, Chinedu Asogwa, were unsuccessful as of press time.
Nsuka, Nigeria – A devastating fire incident on December 28, 2024, gutted the Deeper Life Church located in the Odenigbo area of Nsukka, leaving properties worth millions of naira destroyed.
The fire, which started around 1 pm, also engulfed nearby shops, reducing them to ashes. Witnesses were left in confusion as to the cause of the inferno, with speculation pointing to a possible power surge.
The intervention of the Wilson Fire Service, a private firefighting agency, helped to contain the blaze. However, by the time the fire was brought under control, over ten shops, including a motorcycle repair workshop, had been destroyed.
A team of policemen joined the firefighters in combating the flames, while distraught shop owners desperately attempted to salvage their goods from the wreckage. Victims, speaking anonymously, expressed their shock and inability to pinpoint the exact cause of the fire.
A witness credited the swift response of Wilson Agbo, popularly known as “Son of Paddy,” for preventing further escalation of the fire. Despite this effort, no property from the church could be retrieved, and the losses, including those of nearby businesses, were substantial.
While no casualties were reported, attempts to contact the Enugu State Fire Service in Nsukka and the Nsukka Local Government Chairman, Chinedu Asogwa, were unsuccessful as of press time.
Authorities are yet to confirm the root cause of the fire, though a power surge has been suggested by some residents. Investigation into the incident is ongoing.
