Lagos, Nigeria – A fire outbreak on Tuesday gutted several shops in Ladipo Market, Lagos, destroying goods worth millions of Naira.

The Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, confirmed the incident in a statement to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

According to Oke-Osanyintolu, LASEMA received distress calls via the state’s emergency toll-free lines (767 and 112) at about 12:09 a.m., alerting them to the fire outbreak. The agency’s emergency response team was immediately dispatched from its Cappa Base and arrived at the scene at 12:16 a.m.

“Upon arrival, it was discovered that a warehouse surrounded by shops had been engulfed by flames,” he said.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the fire was caused by an electrical power surge following the restoration of public electricity supply in the area.

Although no lives were lost or injuries reported, the fire at the Ladipo Market destroyed valuable goods, including electronics, generating sets, bicycles, auto spare parts, phones, and home appliances.

Oke-Osanyintolu added that occupants of the affected warehouse had been sensitized on appropriate safety measures to prevent a recurrence.

Authorities have urged traders and business owners to take precautionary steps to avoid similar incidents in the future.
