The Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Prince Falade John, expressed his condolences to the bereaved family and emphasized the need for strict adherence to safety precautions to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
Ilorin, Nigeria – A tragic fire incident in the early hours of Monday claimed the life of a 41-year-old man, identified as Abdulfatai, at Ile Alaparun Isale, Alore, Ilorin, Kwara State.
The victim, who had come to visit a friend and stayed overnight, was reportedly attempting to escape the blaze through a window when he succumbed to the flames. His body was retrieved after residents broke through the walls of the building to gain access.
Eyewitnesses revealed that Abdulfatai was overcome by thick smoke, which rendered him unconscious before he could escape.
“He was killed in the fire, but a couple with their children and another lady managed to escape,” a resident stated. The deceased was said to be a transport union staff member responsible for issuing tickets to motorcycle operators. He had recently introduced his fiancée to his family and was preparing to get married.
The Public Relations Officer of the Kwara State Fire Service, Hassan Adekunle, confirmed the incident, noting that the fire affected five out of the 35 rooms in the building.
According to Adekunle, preliminary investigations revealed that the fire was caused by spontaneous ignition in a room where combustible materials, including petrol, batteries, and a tire inflator engine, were stored.
The remains of the deceased have been handed over to his family at Ile Alate, Abayawo.
