Enugu, Nigeria — A final-year student celebration turned tragic at the Institute of Management and Technology (IMT), Enugu, when a female student was killed and two others injured due to reckless driving by a fellow student.
The incident occurred when the driver, a graduating student, lost control of the vehicle while driving in a motorcade with friends on campus. The car reportedly veered off the road and struck a crowd of students.
Eyewitnesses described the chaotic aftermath, as panicked students tried to lift the vehicle to free the victim, who was trapped underneath. A video of the scene has since circulated widely on social media platforms, particularly WhatsApp.
In a statement released on Tuesday, IMT’s Acting Rector, Emeka Ejim, confirmed that the deceased was not an IMT student. She was identified as a student of Peaceland College who had come to the campus to sign out a friend — one of the injured students.
The other victims, both IMT students from the Public Administration Department, are receiving treatment at Posh Hospital in the New Haven area of Enugu. One of them, an HND II student, suffered a leg fracture and is scheduled for transfer to the Orthopaedic Hospital in Enugu for specialized care.
The institution has suspended all final-year examinations indefinitely in response to the incident. The Acting Rector emphasized that IMT had repeatedly warned students against engaging in dangerous celebrations.
“Despite our warnings, some students chose to celebrate recklessly, leading to this unfortunate incident,” stated Mr. Ejim.
IMT’s spokesperson, Mark Eze, echoed the Acting Rector’s sentiments, adding that the institution’s Academic Board and management would hold an emergency meeting on Wednesday to discuss the incident and determine further action.
A thorough investigation has been launched to establish the details surrounding the tragic event and prevent similar occurrences in the future.
