Taura, Jigawa State — At least 90 people have been confirmed dead following a petrol tanker explosion in Majiya Town, Taura Local Government Area of Jigawa State.
The tragic incident occurred late Tuesday night, according to reports from News360 Nigeria.
Jigawa State Police Spokesperson, Mr. Shi’isu Adam, confirmed the death toll in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday. He also disclosed that around 50 individuals sustained injuries of varying degrees and are currently receiving treatment at Ringim General Hospital.
The explosion took place around 11:30 p.m. near Khadija University in Majiya Town when the tanker driver, en route from Kano to Nguru in Yobe State, lost control of the vehicle. The tanker then exploded, leading to the catastrophic loss of life.
“Despite repeated police warnings urging the public to avoid accident scenes involving fuel tankers, people still gather, which often leads to mass casualties,” Mr. Adam said.
A mass burial for the victims has been scheduled for 9 a.m. on Wednesday.
Emergency response teams are working to assist those injured and investigate the cause of the accident.
