Three Rivers Policewomen Arrested for Alleged Extortion

Port Harcourt, Nigeria — The Rivers State Police Command has apprehended three female police inspectors for alleged extortion of motorists in the Rumuokoro area of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area.

The arrests were made after numerous social media complaints highlighted the alleged misconduct by the officers.

The Command’s spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the arrests in a statement on Wednesday, revealing that a coordinated patrol by the Commissioner of Police’s monitoring team led to the apprehension of the officers on Tuesday.

The arrested officers, identified as Inspector Sarah Anendei, Inspector Caroline Promise, and Inspector Christiana Jatau, were allegedly caught engaging in corrupt activities under the Rumuokoro Flyover at approximately 3 p.m. on October 29, 2024. According to Iringe-Koko, their activities were captured on video by a bystander, providing clear evidence of the alleged extortion.

Iringe-Koko stated, “Two of the officers, Inspectors Caroline Promise and Christiana Jatau, were found conducting this unprofessional behaviour while out of uniform, further contravening police standards.”

During the on-site investigation, the police recovered the extorted funds from the officers, which reinforced the Command’s swift response to enforcing ethical standards among its personnel.

The detained officers are reportedly awaiting disciplinary actions as the Command reaffirms its commitment to accountability and professional integrity. “Any personnel found violating the principles of service will be held accountable,” Iringe-Koko emphasized in the statement.
