A five-story building owned by former Imo State governor Rochas Okorocha collapsed in Abuja on July 1, 2024, causing widespread panic in the neighborhood.
The building, located along Ahmadu Bello Way, was under renovation when it collapsed around 9 pm.
Rescue Efforts:
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command immediately cordoned off the area and began rescue operations. Three persons were rescued from the rubble and taken to the hospital for medical care, according to the police spokesperson Josephine Adeh.
Eyewitness Account:
An eyewitness reported seeing two people pulled out from the rubble and taken to the hospital, stating that there could be more people trapped inside the collapsed building who may have died.
Police Response:
The Commissioner of Police, FCT, CP Benneth C. Igweh, led multiple patrol teams to the scene as first responders and cordoned off the area for rescue operations.
Building Collapse:
The incident occurred at Unity House, Area 11 by Nkwere Street, with the building collapsing at around 8:40 pm.
