A devastating incident occurred in First Avenue, Festac, Lagos State, on Friday, resulting in the loss of two lives.

According to the state police spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, two women were electrocuted during a heavy downpour when lightning struck their makeshift home, built under high-voltage wires.

The tragic event led to an instant electrocution and a subsequent fire outbreak. The victims, who remained indoors during the storm, were unable to escape the fatal consequences.

This incident comes just days after the Lagos State government carried out an eviction of squatters living under a bridge towards Dolphin Estate in Ikoyi, citing illegal settlement and environmental violations. The eviction, which took place on May 1, 2024, resulted in the arrest of 23 individuals.

The Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC), also known as KAI, carried out the eviction and arrest on Tuesday, April 30, 2024. The Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Kunle Rotimi-Akodu, confirmed the incident.

This tragic event serves as a reminder of the importance of prioritizing safety and adhering to environmental regulations to prevent such devastating incidents. May the souls of the deceased rest in peace.
