President Bola Tinubu’s administration has approved the creation of the Ministry of Livestock Development to address the ongoing herders and farmers conflict.

The announcement was made at the Presidential Villa during the launch of the Presidential Committee on Livestock Reforms.

This new ministry aims to resolve the persistent disputes between herders and farmers by implementing sustainable livestock management practices.

In a dramatic Senate session in June, Senate President Godswill Akpabio firmly stated that “cows do not hold citizenship in Nigeria,” amid heated debates and opposition from northern senators against the prohibition of open grazing. The session was marked by intense discussions and passionate exchanges, widely circulated in a video.

The proposed legislation seeks to ban open grazing nationwide, introducing a framework for the establishment and management of ranches. This initiative is designed to promote sustainable practices and reduce conflicts between herders and farmers.

The bill includes specific guidelines and regulations to ensure peaceful coexistence and foster a more organized and modern approach to livestock management.
