NAFDAC denies approving Lung Detox Tea and dismisses claims of promoting smoking as healthy, condemning misleading marketing tactics.
On December 14, 2024, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) dismissed allegations that it had approved a product called Lung Detox Tea, which falsely claimed to make smoking “healthy.”
This clarification came through an official statement by the agency’s Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, shared on NAFDAC’s verified X (formerly Twitter) account.
Prof. Adeyeye strongly refuted the misleading reports and condemned the circulation of a viral video suggesting that the Lung Detox Tea had received NAFDAC’s endorsement. She explained that the agency rejected the application for the product due to its unscientific and harmful claims.
“NAFDAC has been made aware of a misleading video circulating on social media, alleging that the agency approved the registration of a herbal product claiming that ‘smoking is healthy’ when used with their product. This claim is false and completely unfounded,” Prof. Adeyeye stated.
She further emphasized that Lung Detox Tea, Lungitox (Smokers Pride), or any related product has never been approved by NAFDAC, urging Nigerians to disregard such baseless assertions.
The controversy stems from promotional materials associated with Lung Detox Tea, which falsely claimed that its usage could neutralize the adverse health effects of smoking. These claims were particularly alarming, as tobacco use is widely recognized as a leading cause of chronic respiratory illnesses, including lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and other life-threatening conditions.
The product’s marketing attempts to minimize the dangers of smoking were deemed irresponsible and dangerous by NAFDAC, which has consistently advocated for the elimination of misleading health claims in Nigeria’s market.
Prof. Adeyeye reaffirmed the agency’s unwavering dedication to safeguarding public health, highlighting its rigorous regulatory process for the approval of food, drugs, and herbal products in Nigeria. She criticized the false marketing strategies associated with Lung Detox Tea, noting:
“We condemn any attempt to mislead or endanger the public with false claims.”
NAFDAC has urged the public to exercise caution, disregard the claims made in the viral video, and report any suspicious products through the agency’s official channels.
