Ibadan, Nigeria – The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has destroyed substandard and counterfeit products, including drugs, medical devices, and other regulated items worth ₦43 billion.

The exercise took place at the Moniya dump site in Lapite, Akinyele Local Government Area of Oyo State.

Security agencies, representatives from the Oyo State government, and other key stakeholders were present to witness the destruction of these products. NAFDAC’s Director General, Professor Mojisola Adeyeye, was represented at the event by Pharm. Shabba Mohammed, Director of Investigation and Enforcement.

According to the Director General, the destroyed items were voluntarily surrendered to the agency by compliant companies, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and trade unions. Several raids across various locations also led to the seizure of unregistered and registered pharmaceutical products, including aphrodisiacs, sex enhancement drugs, Over The Counter (OTC) medications, and Prescription Only Medicines (POM).

“Over thirty types of wares were confiscated, including banned codeine substances, narcotics, antimalarials, analgesics, antibiotics, and aphrodisiacs, with a total value of over ₦48 million,” said Adeyeye. The agency also raided pharmaceutical warehouses and premises across the country, seizing products worth over ₦700 million.

Among the products destroyed were counterfeit pharmaceutical items such as codeine syrup, expired tramadol, unregistered food products, contraband soaps, tomato paste, counterfeit drinks, perfumes, and body sprays.

Adeyeye urged the public to support the agency in its fight against counterfeit drugs and unwholesome products by reporting manufacturers and businesses involved in illicit activities to the nearest NAFDAC office for investigation.
