Applications Now Open for NASA 2025 STEM Enhancement in Earth Science (SEES) Summer Internship

The 2025 STEM Enhancement in Earth Science (SEES) Summer Internship is officially accepting applications. This unique program, hosted by NASA in collaboration with The University of Texas at Austin Center for Space Research, is designed for high school students eager to delve into the fields of Earth and space science, allowing them to collaborate with experienced professionals.

Participants in the SEES program will have the chance to engage in hands-on research, contributing to NASA’s scientific endeavors while gaining practical experience. The program emphasizes areas such as Earth systems, natural hazards, and climate science, with a focus on working with satellite data. Interns will explore diverse fields including astronomy, remote sensing, and space geodesy, providing them with firsthand exposure to cutting-edge research in Earth and space science.

This year, the SEES program is introducing several new features, including distance learning modules and interactive projects. Interns will not only engage with various topics related to Earth and space science but will also learn Python programming. Throughout the internship, participants will collaborate on research projects with NASA scientists, offering both in-person and remote working options. The program will culminate in a Virtual SEES Science Symposium, allowing interns to showcase their findings.

The 2025 program is structured in two phases. The first phase will run from May 1st to July 1st, where interns will begin with distance learning activities. The second phase will take place between June and July 5th, during which students will engage in virtual project work. The in-person component of the program will be hosted at the University of Texas at Austin from July 6th to July 19th. During this segment, interns will receive housing, meals, and local transportation. Additionally, a limited number of travel scholarships will be available for those traveling to Texas. The program will wrap up with the Virtual SEES Science Symposium scheduled for July 21st-22nd, 2025.

Eligibility for the SEES program includes high school students with a solid academic record and a passion for STEM fields. Applicants are required to submit academic transcripts, respond to essay questions, create an introductory video, and provide a recommendation form. The application deadline is February 22nd, 2025, and late submissions will not be accepted. Recommendation forms must be submitted by March 1st, 2025. Students can expect to receive notification about their selection around May 1st, 2025. Those interested in applying can do so online.
