NEMA Activates Emergency Centres, Deploys Rescue Officers As Flood Warning Intensifies

Flood Destroys 2,517 Houses, 1,000 Hectares of land in Gombe

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has activated its emergency centres nationwide, deploying search and rescue officers to states at risk of flooding.

The agency’s Director-General, Zubaida Umar, has warned of intensifying rainfall and urged stakeholders, including state and local governments, to prepare for potential floods.

NEMA has activated its zonal, territorial, and operation offices in 16 states, including Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt, to work with State Emergency Management Agencies (SEMAs) for rescue operations and assessments.

The agency operates a toll-free emergency line, 0800CALLNEMA (080022556362), and social media platforms for feedback and coordination.

Rescue efforts are ongoing in recently flooded areas, with NEMA conducting rapid assessments to determine further assistance needed.

The agency has been conducting flood advocacy visits to states, engaging with governors, deputy governors, religious leaders, and community leaders to sensitize them on flood prevention and mitigation measures.

NEMA had earlier written to all state governments, listing local governments at risk and outlining actions to be taken to avert or mitigate flooding.

Some states have acknowledged the effectiveness of NEMA’s early warnings and responses in mitigating flood impacts.

The agency reiterates its flood warning, urging all stakeholders to prepare for the intensifying rain season.
