Nigeria-China have achieved a groundbreaking $22.6 billion in trade volume in 2023, marking one of the highest trade relationships in Africa.

Vice-President Kashim Shettima revealed this milestone during a meeting with Zhang Qingwei, Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, emphasizing the rapid 33% annual growth in bilateral trade between the two nations.

In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Stanley Nkwocha, Vice-President Shettima expressed pride in the thriving trade relations between Nigeria and China. He noted the long-standing partnership, spanning over five decades, and lauded the shared commitment to mutual economic growth.

Shettima highlighted the importance of continued cooperation to foster deeper ties, stating, “In 2023, our trade relations with China got to $22.6 billion, one of the highest in Africa, if not the highest.”

The foundation of this robust relationship dates back to 1971 and has been strengthened by high-level visits, including President Bola Tinubu’s official trip to China in September 2024. These interactions have played a pivotal role in deepening economic and political ties, paving the way for enhanced South-South cooperation.

During the meeting, Shettima reiterated Nigeria’s support for the One China policy, emphasizing the importance of cultural respect and collaboration in global affairs. He also addressed Nigeria’s ongoing security challenges, appealing for China’s partnership in leveraging technology to modernize Nigeria’s security infrastructure.

“We are investing in technology, and we need your support, we need your cooperation and your partnership,” he stated.

In response, Zhang Qingwei reaffirmed China’s readiness to advance its strategic partnership with Nigeria, building on agreements made during President Tinubu’s visit.

He emphasized the mutual benefits of the relationship, describing it as a new chapter in Nigeria-China cooperation aimed at elevating their bilateral ties to new heights.
