Abuja, Nigeria – The number of Nigerian students enrolled in U.S. colleges and universities has reached a significant milestone, climbing to 20,029 for the 2023/2024 academic year. This figure represents a 13.5% increase from the previous year, highlighting the country’s growing presence in international education.

According to the 2024 Open Doors Report on International Educational Exchange, Nigeria is now Africa’s top source of international students in the United States and stands as the 7th largest globally. This year’s report revealed a record-breaking total of 1,126,690 international students in U.S. institutions, marking the highest ever for international enrollment.

This development aligns with the 75th anniversary of the Open Doors Report, a key reference for tracking international educational exchange in the United States.

In a statement released Tuesday, the U.S. Embassy emphasized the impact of Nigerian students on American academic and cultural life. “Nigeria, with 20,029 students, reinforces its position as the top sending country from Africa and the seventh largest globally,” the statement said. The Embassy also noted that over 55% of these students are pursuing graduate-level studies, underscoring their dedication to academic excellence and advanced education.

The report further highlighted the rapid increase in student mobility from Sub-Saharan Africa, which recorded a 13% rise in international student numbers for 2023/2024, following an 18% surge the previous year. This makes Sub-Saharan Africa the fastest-growing region for student migration for the second consecutive year.
