The Service announced that the new system has gone live in the United States as of April 11, while Jamaica, Mexico, and Brazil are scheduled to adopt the system by April 14. This marks a significant expansion of the digital passport renewal initiative.

According to a statement released on Monday via the NIS official X page, the contactless application system allows Nigerians to renew their passports without physically visiting a passport centre for biometric capture.

The spokesperson of the NIS, Mr. Akinsola Akinlabi, noted that the innovative service is currently accessible through the “NIS Mobile” app on the Google Play Store, while an iOS version is expected to be launched soon. He also revealed that an enhanced version of the app for both Android and iOS users will be introduced to improve user experience and accessibility.

The second phase follows earlier rollouts in Canada, which began on November 5, 2024, and across Europe, the United Kingdom, and Ireland in February 2025. The expansion into the Americas signals the Service’s continued commitment to streamlining passport services for Nigerians overseas.

At present, the contactless passport application platform is operational in Canada, the USA, Mexico, Jamaica, Brazil, Europe, and parts of Asia. However, the NIS disclosed that the system is yet to be launched in Nigeria and Australia. A future rollout date for both countries will be announced in due course.

Reiterating the agency’s vision, Akinlabi stated that the NIS remains dedicated to offering efficient and tech-driven services to Nigerians globally.
