Abuja, Nigeria – The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has renewed calls for an upward review of the retirement age for all civil servants across the country.
Speaking during the 2025 May Day celebration held at Eagle Square in Abuja, NLC President, Joe Ajaero, said it was crucial to harmonize the retirement age and years of service for all public servants. According to him, civil servants should benefit from the same retirement terms currently enjoyed by teachers, health workers, and members of the judiciary.
“It is imperative to extend the revised retirement age of 65 years or 40 years of service, currently enjoyed by teachers, health professionals, and judges, to all public servants,” Ajaero stated.
The NLC had previously voiced this demand in 2023, with Ajaero affirming the union’s readiness to engage with President Bola Tinubu’s administration to actualize the proposal.
Currently, teachers employed by the government are benefiting from the new retirement policy, following the enactment of a law signed by former President Muhammadu Buhari.
