The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has praised the Supreme Court’s judgment granting fiscal autonomy to local government councils, calling it a “restoration of hope” in Nigeria’s democracy.
In a statement, NLC President Joe Ajaero described the ruling as “courageous and salubrious” and commended the 9th National Assembly, the Buhari administration, and President Bola Tinubu for their efforts leading to the judgment.
However, Ajaero raised questions about the conduct of local government elections by state electoral commissions, suggesting that the Supreme Court ruling’s implementation may require a regulatory agency or commission with oversight over state electoral commissions.
The Supreme Court had declared that it was unconstitutional for state governors to hold funds allocated for local government administrations and barred them from dissolving council executives in their respective states.
The court also stated that local government councils should manage their funds themselves and that a state government has no power to appoint a caretaker committee, recognizing only democratically elected governments.
