Lagos, Nigeria – The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Ltd has entered into a landmark Gas Sale and Purchase Agreement (GSPA) with Ssonic Petroleum Ltd to supply 80 million standard cubic feet per day (mmscf/d) of natural gas to the company’s planned Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) facility in the Lekki Free Trade Zone, Lagos State.

The agreement, executed on March 6, 2025, involves NNPC Gas Marketing Ltd (NGML) and its joint venture partner, NIPCO Gas Ltd, ensuring a steady supply of natural gas to the upcoming LNG plant for the next 20 years.

Boosting Domestic Gas Utilization

In an official statement released on Friday, NNPCL’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Olufemi Soneye, highlighted the strategic importance of the deal, stating that it aligns with NNPC Ltd’s broader vision of promoting natural gas as a cleaner, cost-effective, and sustainable energy source.

“This agreement reinforces NNPC Ltd’s commitment to leveraging gas as a key driver of industrial growth and economic development in Nigeria,” Soneye stated.

The project is expected to significantly contribute to Nigeria’s domestic gas supply, supporting industries, creating jobs, and enhancing energy security. Additionally, the move aligns with the nation’s efforts to transition toward cleaner energy and reduce its carbon footprint.

Nigeria’s Push for a Gas-Powered Economy


The administration of President Bola Tinubu has prioritized the expansion of Nigeria’s gas economy, with key initiatives such as the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGi) promoting gas mobility through Compressed Natural Gas (CNG).

NNPCL and other oil and gas industry players have been actively involved in gas production and supply agreements aimed at ensuring the availability of natural gas for both industrial and domestic use.

With this latest agreement, Nigeria takes another step toward harnessing its vast natural gas reserves for economic growth and sustainable energy solutions.
