Lagos, Nigeria – The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has strongly refuted claims made in a viral social media video that petrol sold at its outlets is substandard and does not last as long as that supplied by Dangote Refinery.
In the widely circulated video, a content creator conducted an experiment comparing Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) allegedly purchased from an NNPCL retail station with that from MRS filling station, which sources its fuel from the Dangote Refinery. The experiment reportedly showed that petrol from MRS lasted 13 minutes longer than the one bought from NNPCL.
However, in a statement issued on Saturday, NNPCL’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Olufemi Soneye, dismissed the claim as baseless and lacking in scientific credibility. He described the video as an “unverified and amateur research” that fails to meet professional standards of accuracy and oversight.
NNPCL: Our Petrol Meets High Industry Standards
Soneye emphasized that NNPCL sells high-quality petrol that meets stringent industry requirements for efficiency, durability, and environmental sustainability. He further revealed that a significant portion of PMS sold at NNPCL outlets, particularly in Lagos where the video originated, is sourced from the Dangote Refinery.
“It is important to emphasize that a significant percentage of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) sold at NNPC retail stations in Lagos—where this deceptive video was created—is sourced from the Dangote Refinery, a strategic partner in promoting local production and energy security,” he stated.
He assured consumers that Dangote Refinery adheres to strict industry regulations, ensuring that all petroleum products, including those supplied to NNPCL, meet global quality standards.
The company’s spokesperson accused those behind the viral video of attempting to mislead the public and damage the company’s reputation. He warned that NNPCL would no longer tolerate such misinformation and would take legal action against individuals or groups involved in spreading false claims.
“This misleading video represents yet another desperate attempt by economic saboteurs to misinform the public and tarnish NNPC Ltd’s reputation. We will not tolerate deliberate misinformation designed to undermine our operations and mislead Nigerians,” Soneye said.
He stressed that they remains committed to providing affordable petrol of the highest industry standards to Nigerians and urged the public to disregard the allegations in the video.
