North Korean Soldiers Supporting Russia Reportedly Sent in Ukraine, Raising Concerns Over Foreign Military Involvement
Several thousand North Korean soldiers are undergoing military training in Russia, with reports suggesting they could be deployed to Ukraine’s front lines by the end of 2024, according to Ukrainian intelligence.
An anonymous Ukrainian military intelligence source stated that North Korean officers are already stationed in Russian-occupied areas of Ukraine to observe local troops and assess battlefield conditions. However, Ukrainian forces have not yet encountered North Korean units in active combat, as reported by The Washington Post.
While it remains unclear where North Korean soldiers might be positioned, one possibility is the border regions of Russia, which could free up Russian troops for fighting in Ukraine. A Ukrainian intelligence official noted this could have a “significant impact” on the war’s dynamics.
Andriy Kovalenko, head of Ukraine’s Center for Countering Disinformation, confirmed via Telegram that North Korean military personnel, including engineers overseeing Pyongyang’s weapons, are already in Ukraine. Some have reportedly been killed. Kovalenko added that North Korea has supplied Russia with low-quality ammunition and KN-23 ballistic missiles.
South Korea’s Ministry of Defense also backed reports of North Korean involvement, further heightening concerns over foreign intervention in the conflict.
